May Day, the first day of May, was a time to celebrate the arrival of spring. In the Middle Ages it was the custom to gather wildflowers and green branches, weave floral garlands, and dance around a Maypole. Here a group of young folk are depicted ready to set forth on a jaunt through the countryside to collect foliage.
